Six-Figure Compensation for Mesothelioma

A woman who is dying of mesothelioma, a deadly lung cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, has been awarded a six-figure sum in compensation.

Debbie Brewer's father worked at Devonport Dockyard as a lagger in the 1960s. During this period he regularly came into contact with asbestos and it is believed that the deadly particles were passed from father to daughter when she hugged him when he came in from work. Her father died last year from lung cancer linked to asbestos exposure.

Mrs Brewer was diagnosed with mesothelioma a year ago. The disease is fatal and she has been told she may only have months to live.

Mrs Brewer brought her claim for compensation against the Ministry of Defence (MoD), which owned the dockyard where her father worked. The MoD admitted liability after details of her work history and her medical records showed that there was no other possible source of the asbestos and agreed to pay an undisclosed six-figure sum in compensation.
